Kudermukh is basically a mountain range lies in the regional state of Karnataka, India. Also, it’s the name of a small town that is positioned near the mountain. The name “Kudermukh” means “horse face,” and the side view of a mountain there resembles the same. Since it was approached from Samse village, it’s even referred as 'Samseparvata.’ From Chikmagalur, this horse face range is towards 95 km southwest. Apart from the mountain range, there is another reason that augments the popularity of Kudermukh. Yes, we are attributing towards the Kudermukh National Park that has been named after the peak and covers around three districts (Dakshin Kannada (South Kanara), Chikmagalur, Udupi, Narasimha Parvatha and Jamalabad Fort). And also, the park has been demarcated into four foremost ranges - Kudremukh, Kerekatte, Kalsa and Shimoga.
The Kudermukh National Park is rich in iron ore deposits and is capturing the area of 600.32 sq. km. From the sea level, this phenomenal park is 1,894.3 m above, and also, Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL), country’s largest iron ore mining company is positioned within the boundaries of the park. Round the year, the park appears salubrious; however, there is heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. That is why tourists start landing into the park soon after the heavy rainfall. But alas, the best time to witness the animals is from December to February, when animals roam around in the jungle in the quest of sunbath.
Within and across the ranges, thick vegetation and extensive fauna is available, which is certainly a treat for the tourists and vacationers. On the western ends, the park embraces dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forests that put across the nature’s beauty in the best form. And predominantly, the plantations of Eucalyptus, Casuarina, Acacia auriculiformis and Grevillea robusta can be witnessed here in plenty. In contrast, on the northern and eastern sides, the plantation of coffee and tea is underlined where tourists do land to see the process of growing these seeds live.
In terms of species, the Kudermukh National Park is quite fortunate as it shares the sheer presence of tiger, leopard, wild dog, jackal, lion-tailed macaque, common langur, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, Malabar giant squirrel, giant flying squirrel, porcupine and mongoose with the visitors.
